A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
