Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
